American Lake is located right off Veterans Drive in Lakewood and offers fishing, boat rentals and great picnic areas. Every year the city plants over 10,000 fish in the lake for avid fisherman. Lakewood’s Colonial Center offers visitors a chance to see the history of the area displayed in pictures, plaques and other historical artifacts. Lakewood’s Towne Center offers a full shopping mall and theaters as well as some German specialty food offerings. If you’re looking for a great German deli, visit Hess Deli and Bakery in the heart of Lakewood Towne Center. They offer German potato salad, mixed meat sandwiches and authentic pretzels and breads.
The Lakewood Playhouse is home to many musicals, dramas and other plays throughout the year. Their annual season offers something for everyone in the family. Lakewood is only 4 miles from Joint Base Lewis McChord, and the base is one of the major employers in the Lakewood area. Other major employers include Multicare Health Systems and the Public School System. Private employers in the area include Umpqua Bank, IKEA and Nordstrom as well as many local banks and credit unions.
